Toughened, Laminated or Float? Choosing Safe Glass for Your Home
A plain-English guide to glass types and where Australian Standards require safety glass.
The three you'll hear about most
Float (annealed) glass: standard clear glass. Fine for many windows and cabinets, but it breaks into sharp shards, so it isn't allowed in higher-risk spots.
Toughened (tempered) glass: heat-treated to be much stronger and, when it does break, it crumbles into small blunt pieces. Used for shower screens, glass doors, balustrades and low windows.
Laminated glass: two sheets bonded with a tough interlayer, so it holds together when broken (like a car windscreen). Great for security, noise reduction and overhead glass.
Where the building code requires safety glass
Australian Standard AS 1288 sets out where Grade-A safety glass (toughened or laminated) must be used, including shower and bath enclosures, glass doors and side panels, and windows close to floor level. Using the wrong glass here isn't just unsafe, it can fail a building inspection.
We know the standard inside out, so when we quote we'll specify the right, compliant glass for each opening. You don't have to work it out yourself.
Upgrades worth considering
While the glass is out, it's often the perfect time to upgrade: double glazing for warmth and lower energy bills, acoustic laminated glass to cut traffic noise, or obscure/frosted glass for privacy. Ask us what makes sense for your home. We'll give you straight advice, not a hard sell.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know if I need safety glass?
If the glass is in a door, near a door, low to the floor, or in a wet area like a shower, it almost certainly needs to be Grade-A safety glass under AS 1288. We'll confirm exactly what's required when we measure.
Is toughened or laminated glass better?
It depends on the job. Toughened is ideal for showers, doors and balustrades; laminated is better for security, noise reduction and overhead glazing. We'll recommend the right one for your situation.
Can you match unusual or old glass?
Yes. We offer heritage glass matching, obscure/patterned glass and leadlight repairs, so replacements blend in with the rest of your home.
